Birmingham Shopping

(Try keyword "Women's Fashions" or a ZIP code)

From a peanut shop and an old-fashioned dime store to a rare book loft, Birmingham brims with shopping pleasures. Downtown has its own character with a mix of enterprises, old and new. Parisian -- where "you're somebody special" -- is in the AmSouth Harbert Plaza, and other downtown businesses along 20th Street include Bromberg's Jewelers and Bon Ton Hatters, the latter offering shoeshines along with headgear. Downtown's First Avenue has BB's China & Glassware. Second Avenue has Gallery 2306 for original art, sculpture and Torme Foods (owner Merv and twin Marv being cousins of Mel, the late crooner). The Pepper Place historic district has upscale shops for gardening, kitchenware, masonry arts, and fancy plumbing fixtures. The Five Points South shopping district, with many enticing eateries, boasts both the Charlemagne Record Exchange and the Golden Temple, selling Birkenstock sandals, body oils, and sprout sandwiches. Downtown's Homewood has a renovated Main Street look with stores including Pink Tulip for women's apparel and the At Home Furnishings with hand-painted martini glasses. Really Cool Stuff has stuff that's just that, from moderate to pricey, and the circa 1907 Peanut Depot cranks out roasted nuts by the gazillion, especially during football season.

Smith Variety, an old-style five-and-dime with a candy counter filled with gumdrops, jelly beans and seasonal sweets like candy corn, also stocks yard goods including ribbons and fringes on the bolt, plus toys, kitchen gadgets, and party goods. Reed Books, operated by Jim Reed, author of Dad's Tweed Coat: Small Wisdoms, Hidden Comforts, Unexpected Joys, is Alabama's largest old book loft and museum. Malls are also big in Birmingham. Housed beneath the world's longest skylight, Riverchase Galleria's 200 specialty shops and stores include Macy's, Parisian, Proffitt's, American Eagle Outfitters, and Godiva Chocolatier. The Summit, among Birmingham's newest malls, has Eddie Bauer, Williams-Sonoma and Zany Brainy. The bi-level Colonial Brookwood Village on Lakeshore Parkway is anchored by Parisian and Macy's. Century Plaza has JCPenney, McRae's and Sears, and Eastwood Mall has Parisian, Service Merchandise, and Books-A-Million. With some 30 stores, WaterMark Place is Birmingham's outlet central with Gap Outlet, Banana Republic Outlet, Polo Ralph Lauren Outlet and more.
